Anyone can call themselves a massage therapist. These are the three qualifications behind the hands you will be booking, where each one came from, and what it means once you are on the table.
Wat Po Traditional Medical School, Bangkok
Wat Po is the temple where Thai massage was formally recorded and taught. The stone inscriptions in its grounds set out the energy lines and pressure points that traditional Thai massage still follows today, and the school attached to the temple has taught the practice continuously since 1955. It is the reference point the rest of the profession measures itself against.
Yuwaree completed the Thai Traditional Massage certificate there in January 2011. It is the qualification behind every treatment on the menu that carries the word traditional, and it is why the pressure work follows a set sequence rather than wandering wherever happens to feel tight.
A traditional session is a structured routine worked along the body's Sen lines, not an improvised rub. Yuwaree knows where the sequence goes next before she gets there, which is why clients tend to describe the work as methodical rather than random.
Thai Massage School of Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the northern centre of Thai massage teaching, and its school operates under the authorisation of the Thai Ministry of Education. Yuwaree took two specialist diplomas there in February 2011, in the weeks after finishing at Wat Po.
The first is Thai Chair Massage, the seated and fully clothed technique that concentrates on the back, neck, shoulders and arms. It is the training behind the Back, Neck and Shoulder treatment, and it is why that session targets the places desk work does its damage rather than treating the back as one undifferentiated slab.
The second is Thai Foot Massage, the reflexology tradition that works pressure points across the soles and maps them to systems elsewhere in the body. That diploma sits behind the Reflexology Foot treatment.
Two of the treatments on the menu are not general massage adapted to a body part. They are separate disciplines, each with its own training and its own reason for existing.
